Is It Okay to Switch Back and Forth Between Heat and AC?

You may have noticed that it’s been quite warm the past few days (in the middle of February no less!), but while you may be tempted to switch your thermostat from heat to cool, take a beat. We’re here to tell you that you shouldn’t go changing your settings so fast! While it is sometimes okay to switch back and forth, you need to be smart about it, otherwise, you’ll put your HVAC system through the wringer and it’ll ultimately cost you more money. Here are some tips for properly switching between systems.

Set Your Thermostat to Auto

If you have your thermostat set to “auto,” it’ll automatically shut off once the desired temperature is reached. Otherwise, it will continue to run and cost you more money.

Wait Out the Cycle

Both your heat and AC go through cycles, and you should avoid switching systems before a cycle is complete. Once it stops running, set your thermostat to “off” and then give your HVAC about five minutes or so before switching systems.

Don’t Rush the Process

Turning your thermostat up or down during extreme temperatures won’t solve anything. In fact, it’ll just cause unnecessary wear and tear on your HVAC system and thus use extra energy. Adjust your thermostat a few degrees at a time to allow the system to catch up without running for longer than necessary.

Keep Up With Maintenance

It’s important to keep in mind that your system will work a little harder if you switch it back and forth too often. So try to avoid it if you can—but obviously don’t go sweating yourself out of your home in the middle of this warm spell we’re having! The best way to ensure your HVAC system is working properly is by keeping up with preventative maintenance. The Tower Heating & Air Peace of Mind Membership Plan ensures your HVAC runs smoothly all year long—and includes regular checks throughout the year.
