An important reminder for our gas heating customers: check your carbon monoxide (CO) detector! We recommend checking your CO detectors every month to make sure they are functioning properly. Keep reading for more tips on checking your CO detector, when it needs to be replaced, and more.
What Does a CO Detector Do?
You may have a CO detector and not even know what its main function is. Well, as the name might suggest, a CO detector detects the presence of carbon monoxide gas in your home. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, tasteless, and odorless gas that is slightly less dense than air and is highly poisonous. Because it’s invisible to the senses, it’s important to check your CO detector regularly and test it to make sure it’s working to keep you and your family safe.
How To Test a CO Detector
You should have at least one CO detector on each floor. To check them, press the “Test” button. It will emit a high-pitched, loud beeping if the CO detector is working properly.
How Often Should Batteries Be Replaced?
If you have a carbon monoxide alarm with replaceable batteries, you should replace them every six months.
When Should You Get a New CO Detector?
CO detectors only last so long. On average, you should replace them every five to seven years or so. Most CO detectors will emit a chirping sound that will let you know they need to be replaced as well.
