Let’s Talk Summer Thermostat Settings in Raleigh

Raleigh, it is hot, and it is only going to get hotter! 馃敟 While we love soaking up the sun, when we are in our home, we want it to be cool and comfortable. But does that comfort have to come at a price in the form of your energy bill? Not with proper maintenance and a few guidelines.
The Guidelines
In the summer, it is recommended that you set your home’s cooling system at 78 degrees Fahrenheit when you are at home. If you leave the house for work or know you will be out for at least four hours, you should set the cooling system to 88 degrees Fahrenheit.
Energy.gov聽reports that you can save as much as 10% a year on heating and cooling by simply turning your thermostat back 7-10 degrees for eight hours a day from its normal setting.
If you are heading out of town for a few days, do not turn off your air conditioner! This is a common mistake that we hear about all the time. If you do turn it off, it will take a very long time for your house to cool off again. Even worse鈥攖his will not save you any money鈥攊t could actually end up costing you more. Heat and humidity build up in your home’s walls, furniture, and carpet so it will take hours to eliminate that. When you are planning to leave for a few days, we believe the magic number is four degrees warmer. If your home is normally set at 78 degrees, bump it up to 82 when you are going to be gone for a couple of days. This will help keep those utility bills lower.
